Not just a pretty face: Urad or Black Gram Lentil

Updated: Jan 10, 2023

One of the most popular lentils eaten all over the Indian subcontinent is urad daal or black gram lentils. The lentil is versatile for different cooking methods and contains a high level of vitamins and minerals, making it a key ingredient in maintaining a healthy diet.

So what's the deal? Well for starters, as Gujarati cuisine is largely vegetarian, ensuring the diet contains a good percentage of protein is very important and urad is a great source of the stuff; in just 100 grams of urad, you will find just over 20 grams of protein.

What else? As well as protein, urad is great for improving total energy levels as it is a good source of iron. One of the other perks of eating black gram is that it has large quantities of dietary fibre, helping to clear the gut waste and maintain a healthy digestive system. Finally, urad contains a vast number of vitamins and minerals that are great for the skin, hair and general health, with high levels of B1, B3 and vitamin C, alongside many minerals like calcium, potassium, magnesium, and phosphorus.
